DSE Chinese writing details and examples

Don’t know how to write a Chinese composition? As the proverb goes, "Know yourself and your enemy and you will be victorious in every battle." I believe this writing guide will definitely help you. Let’s study quietly and then amaze everyone in the exam room!

DSE Chinese writing scoring criteria:

The DSE Chinese writing standards are divided into five parts. They are "content", "expression", "structure", "punctuation font" and "typos".

content

Content proportion (40%) is the highest. Therefore, we need to make sure that the content of the composition does not go off topic. If you go off topic, unfortunately, you can only get 12 points at most, and the failure rate will also be greatly increased. The examiner will assess whether the candidate's content meets the writing requirements───it is rich in content and impressive. Other assessment contents include whether there are improper structural cohesion, wrong sentences, etc. Whether the material is appropriate, whether it is related to the theme and idea, and whether the statement is reasonable.

Express

Expression ratio 20%. It mainly assesses the candidates' writing skills and whether they can appropriately use their rhetoric and writing skills to express their thoughts, while taking into account the wording and sentence structure of the sentences. Fancy rhetoric and techniques may not necessarily lead to high scores. If candidates are unable to skillfully use different rhetorical and writing methods, the minimum requirement is to ensure that they are on topic.

structure

The structure accounts for 20%. It mainly assesses whether the content of the candidate's article is arranged easily for people to understand, and whether the paragraphs are clearly distinguished.Organizational connectionIf the arrangement is reasonable and it contributes to the theme and idea of the article, the score will be relatively improved. On the contrary, if the structure of the article is unreasonable and off-topic, the score will not be high.

punctuation

Punctuation accounts for 10%, and it mainly assesses whether the punctuation used by the candidates is accurate and the readability of the fonts. Candidates with good-looking fonts may not be given extra points by the corrector. On the contrary, points will be deducted for fonts that are ugly or difficult to read. Candidates are asked not to write too casually, as if they were written with chicken feet, so please avoid deducting points for punctuation and fonts.

typo

The number of typos is a hidden bonus point for the essay paper (3%). If there are only 0-1 typos, there will be no points deduction. But candidates should note that these three points actually have a great impact on the composition score. Therefore, candidates are asked to pay more attention to their word usage to avoid typos.

Deduction details are as follows:

  • 0 – 1 gives 3 points;
  • 2 – 4 points are awarded;
  • 5 – 7 points are awarded;
  • No points will be awarded for 8 or more (repeated errors will not be counted).

Number of words in composition

The official minimum word limit is 650 words, and points will be deducted for insufficient words. According to real statistics, in fact, the average word count of most good essays is about 920 words. The more words in an essay, the better. A good composition often condenses the essence of the article, with a full plot, clear intention, and sublimation of emotions. For example, if the article is an argumentative essay, the structure of the article will be very complete, and there will also be very detailed examples to support the author's arguments. Naturally, the article has more words.

What are the techniques for Chinese composition?

The first key point is to review the topic. Circle the topic to remind yourself at all times and never go off topic.

Lyrical essay:

  • The first condition is to post the title.
  • Avoid writing right away or thinking while writing (don’t be afraid of not having enough time to start writing right away, this is the most common mistake).
  • Spend about fifteen minutes thinking clearly about the key points of the article title and the topic requirements.
  • Write the story roughly and determine the ending.
  • Pay attention to the ups and downs.

example:

2018DSE essay topic "What I saw and felt when I revisited an old place"
Revisiting is to visit a place again, which means the focus is on the reasons for the visit, what happened, and what you saw and heard. Rather than what you see and hear, the changes in scenes, characters, and moods are the parts that candidates need to focus on and describe in detail. Candidates should briefly write down what they saw and heard during their first visit. They only need to briefly express the environment and feelings when they first came here. Otherwise, it will be impossible to highlight the changes in people, things, and mentality when revisiting, making it difficult to make this article stand out. From a scoring perspective, if the "lyrical" effect is not achieved, the score will naturally not be high. The plot of the story is an important part. Candidates must keep in mind the following four steps of writing: "starting", "carrying", "turning" and "joining". Especially lyrical writing is very suitable.

rise

The topic should be addressed as soon as possible at the beginning of the article. Candidates can use flashbacks to arouse readers' curiosity while making the structure of the article smoother and more natural, and the emotions expressed more profound. It is also a good way to kill two birds with one stone.

For example:

"Looking at the familiar yet unfamiliar thin body in front of the stove, today I will revisit the old place of my ancestral home. The rustling, gurgling sounds of cooking and the noisy laughter of the past have disappeared together."

Undertake

Cheng means to take over. Candidates need to explain the reasons for revisiting the old place, and at the same time write about the protagonist's feelings and sights when visiting the place for the first time, and lay down the foreshadowing.

For example:

"I sat in the restaurant, slowly enjoying the meal, and my eyes wandered around. The familiar scenes made me feel both familiar and strange. This is my old residence in Shunde. Here, I avoided the fate of being demolished, but Compared with more than ten years ago, this place has lost a lot of its luster. I spent half of my childhood here, living with my grandparents. Later, my parents left Shunde to work in Hong Kong, and I followed them to Hong Kong. Today, I I am already in my twenties, and I have not been back to Shunde for many years, and I have not even made a phone call. This time I came back purely because of work arrangements, which allowed me to come back to this place."

change

Turn, the most important part of the article. Candidates should ensure that the transition is natural and reasonable and corresponds to the previous foreshadowing. Are there any unexpected things or changes in circumstances. Regardless of the changes in the protagonist, surprise, disappointment or sadness, candidates should write in detail about the changes in the thing or person.

For example:

"Arjun, Arjun, how long has it been since you came back?" Grandma murmured, not knowing that Arjun was actually my brother, not me. I didn't tell her the truth, and the evil thought in my heart wanted me to blame the unfilial sins of the child she remembered as a child who had been away from home for many years and never returned home to her younger brother. Although I know that this crime can only be borne by me. The upward curve of the corners of her mouth made me feel guilty even more. She took me to every corner of the old house, from the attic where children's clothes were piled, to a crib covered in linen in the living room, to a small bathtub in the side room. She talked about the past with joyful expression, arousing my memories that had been dormant for more than ten years. Even when I looked at her white hair and the deep wrinkles on her forehead like annual rings on a tree trunk, I was shocked to realize that I owed her more than ten years. More than ten years later, she still treats me as my dearest friend, just like she did to me back then. "

combine

The last part of the article. Candidates should summarize the emotions expressed in the article, or whether the protagonist has new experiences and thoughts after revisiting the old place this time. The thoughts and feelings that candidates most want to express throughout the article will be revealed to readers here.

For example:

"She gave me a wonderful childhood, but now I have easily forgotten the kindness she gave me in raising me! She made me feel loved, but I chose to stay away when it was time to repay it, and I have not done so for many years. Contact is really unfilial. The lost years can no longer be retrieved, and I am no longer the yellow-haired boy of the past. When time is irreversible, I should reflect on myself: Thinking about me as a young child, flying high and carrying my mother. ! "
